Hello to my fellow GUSers down under,
I read your article and I thought that it was really pretty good.
It told the "truth" about the GUS that it is a great board but that it is
some what handicapped. I do not know about you all but when I buy a
product I want it to work properly from the get go. The GUS does not do
this. The comment about the card being a techno minefield is entirely
accurate. If I had not had access to the Internet I would have been sunk,
many do not have this luxury. I thought the article was critical but
fair, rather than it being biased, I felt you the reader who is devoted to
the GUS was biased in your interpretation of the article.

Some comments about that GUS review:
- Patch caching need not be a manual task. There are many patch
caching aware apps (eg. WinJammer 2.24, Cakewalk Pro 2.0,
Media Player, PowerChords, Recording Session) that will
automatically load up the correct patches as the user needs them.
- Only the 30 or so patches for a particular piece of music need
be cached at any one time. No need to load up all 192 GM
instruments.
- Evidently, many people disagree about the GUS being inadequate for
MIDI musicians as there are many musicians using the GUS as an
inexpensive sampling synth.

Any version of SBOS should work if you set up the GUS for port 220h and
SB IRQ 7 and just run main.exe instead of synd.bat. If you set your SB
IRQ to something other than 7, run main.exe with the /iirq<n> switch.
For example, if you have the SB IRQ on 5 like I have it, then run main.exe
with /iirq5.

Gravis,
Don't you think that it is time to release drivers to these 2 operating
systems? People have been waiting for these for a long while and almost
all other vendors are providing NT and OS/2 drivers (even the newer
Diamond Sonic and Maestro/16). I am not using NT or OS/2 but I am seriously
considering it. My GUS is the only piece of hardware that kept me from
them. The quality of GUS is hard to give up. But if people have to wait
much longer, I think you are going to lose big time. Newer boards will
already have these drivers bundled. Well, maybe it's time to look at
some new soundcards.............

Well folks I finally got the dope on Rules of Engagement 2 (ROE2) and the GUS,
It seems that ROE2 will work with the GUS via the Miles Drivers and
that you must have Ultramid.exe running to run the game. Though this
ain't real clear at first :-t. It has its own patches but no native GUS
support. Impressions Software will send out the drivers as well as an
upgrade of the game (v1.05) for free. To contact them write to,

The game is a one of Grand Tactical thinking and there is not too
much beyond that. There is a nice campaign editor and ship builder built
in. It is sort of like Carriers at War (in space) but is not a Reach
for the Stars. They say they will be coming out with a strategic version of
the game but that it won't be ready for some time. Check it out if you
like a board game type feel to your war games.
All for now

I have (finally) successfully managed to get my GUS to record data and
playback those same data after a delay. The delay can be so short that you
can't notice it, or it can be as long as the GUS' memory/sample rate will
accommodate. If you would like to try this program, please e-mail me. If
there is enough interest in my program, I will upload the executeable to epas.
DISCLAIMER: Right now the program is in very rudimentary form, is not
incredibly user friendly, and has no documentation (yet). For these reasons
it is not very useful, but it does demonstrate (quite well) that such a feat
is well within the realm of the GUS and the low level SDK. (These reasons
are also why I will only upload the executable and not the source.)
If you would like to read about some of the technical issues involved, get a
copy of today's "GUS Programmer's Digest", I think it will be V3 #11. The
digests are archived on archive.epas.utoronto.ca. The file you will want is
/pub/pc/ultrasound/sdk-digest/vol-3/11. If you can't (repeat: "can't", NOT
"didn't") get the file from the archive, e-mail me and I will forward you a
copy.

Looking for help in configuring the Trax software to use ultrasound GUS
sound board. I have it completely installed and operating without error
except the no sound is generated through the sound board. Has anyone the
solution to this problem. Appreciate any help.
